Instead of you just having to reading the thread, I'll run down how to prevent the game from crashing in story mode: I ran into the same issue and looked into the Steam discussions(some made back in 2012), most were the same issue as of today and luckily, I found a response from a user who listed instructions on how to fix the error I found a solution for those who had a problem with story mode after the game crashes
